Ethiopia

H.I.M. is working to serve the needs of Ethiopia’s orphaned and at-risk children by opening a home for those children in Addis Ababa.  Although still in the early stages of development, H.I.M. intends the home to provide crucial care to orphaned and vulnerable children on an emergency basis, while simultaneously working to locate permanent family homes for the children through reunification whenever possible, and through national and international adoption when appropriate.  H.I.M. is currently raising the funds necessary to open the home, and will soon seek sponsors for each of the children.  Please contact us for more information about how you can get involved!

Why Ethiopia?

  • There are 4.6 million orphans in Ethiopia.1 That’s 1 out of every 9 children.
  • There are between 150,000-200,000 street children nationally, with a further one million vulnerable or at risk of ending up on the streets.2
  • In Addis Ababa, more than 30% of girls ages 10-14 are not living with their parents. Twenty percent of that 30% have run away from child marriages.1
  • One in 10 children die before their 1st birthday.3
  • One in 6 children die before age five.3
  • Eighty-two percent of the population survives on less than one dollar a day.2
  • Ethiopia has the largest HIV/AIDS infected population in the world.4
  • 1.2 million children are orphaned due to AIDS.2
  • About 72 percent of school-age children have no access to formal education5
  • 55 percent of Ethiopian children under age five are stunted due to malnutrition.5
